3.
REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Description
The air compressor shall be of the commercial classification
" g a r a g e type" a n d s h a l l c o n s i s t o f e i t h e r a n a i r - c o o l e d , p i s t o n c o m p r e s s o r u n i t o r
a i r - o i l c o o l e d , rotary compressor unit, both types with an air reservoir, airhose,
a n d power unit.
3 . 2 F i r s t a r t i c l e . Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), a sample shall be
subjected to first article inspection (see 6.3) in accordance with 4.3.
3.3 Material , Material shall be as specified herein. Materials not specified
shall be selected by the contractor and shall be subject to all provisions of this
specification.
3.4 M a t e r i a l d e t e r i o r a t i o n Prevention and control. The air compressor shall be
fabricated from compatible materials, inherently corrosion resistant or treated to
provide protection against the various forms of corrosion and deterioration that
m a y be encountered in any of the applicable operating and storage environments to
w h i c h the air compressor may be exposed.
3 . 4 . 1 Dissimilar metals. Dissimilar metals shall not be used in intimate
contact with each other unless protected against galvanic corrosion. Dissimilar
m e t a l s a n d m e t h o d s o f p r o t e c t i o n a r e d e f i n e d and detailed in MIL-STD-889.
3 . 4 . 2 Cadmium p l a t i n g
C a d m i u m plating and cadmium plated parts shall not be
used.
3.4.3 Identification c a t i o n o f materials
a n d finishes
The contractor shall identify
the specific material, material finish or treatment for use with component and
subcomponent, a n d s h a l l m a k e i n f o r m a t i o n a v a i l a b l e u p o n r e q u e s t t o t h e c o n t r a c t i n g
officer or designated representative.

materials are those materials which have been collected from solid waste and
r e p r o c e s s e d to become a source of raw materials, a s d i s t i n g u i s h e d f r o m v i r g i n r a w
m a t e r i a l s . T h e components, p i e c e s a n d p a r t s i n c o r p o r a t e d i n t h e a i r c o m p r e s s o r
m a y be newly fabricated from recovered materials to the maximum extent
p r a c t i c a b l e , provided the air compressor produced meets all other requirements of
t h i s specification. U s e d , r e b u i l t o r r e m a n u f a c t u r e d c o m p o n e n t s , p i e c e s a n d p a r t s
shall not be incorporated in the air compressor.
3.5 O p e r a t i n g t e m p e r a t u r e . the compressors shall perform as specified herein
i n any ambient temperature from 120 to -25 0 F .
